How I came to Wealthy Affiliate
My story is probably not too different from yours. You’re actually probably reading this because you asked the same question I did…How can I make money at home? It’s really a common question that a lot of people are asking these days…whether it’s health, wanting to spend more time with family, tired of the rat race, or like me…laid off of your job and just don’t want to work for someone else anymore.
I had actually started looking for something to do online so I could quit my job. It got overwhelming though trying to decipher the legit opportunities from the scams. I found some jobs that were legit, but they didn’t really offer a lot of money and I’d still be answering to someone else and playing by their rules.
I happened upon Wealthy Affiliate and liked what I saw. Wealthy Affiliate trains and walks people through the process of becoming a successful affiliate marketer. If you’re not sure what affiliate marketing is, then click HERE to see my post on How to Start in Affiliate Marketing.
I’ll be honest, I don’t know everything there is to know about affiliate marketing, but there are a lot of people at Wealthy affiliate that do. Keep reading and you’ll see what drew me to Wealthy Affiliate and what I’ve gained from joining them.
Wealthy Affiliate, The Company
Wealthy Affiliate, founded in 2005, is a platform that supports affiliate marketers and internet entrepreneurs. WA currently has around 300,000 active members.
It is online training platform that walks you through the process of starting your own affiliate marketing website. The training guides you through all aspects of setting up a website and how to write content that will get you noticed by Google. Being ranked on Google is the key to traffic and traffic is the key to making referrals for commission. More on this later.
How Does Wealthy Affiliate Help You Make Money
It’s like telling a friend where you got something from and they go and buy one for themselves. All you gain here is a compliment that the friend likes your taste.
The difference with WA is that when they click on the link you provide, the company gives you a percentage of that sale. Amazon Associates is the biggest affiliate program, but there are thousands…most online companies offer the same program.
Another way is to have a website like this one telling others about Wealthy Affiliate. With each person that signs up as a Premium member through clicking on your links, you receive a commission of $23.50 recurring monthly (month-to-month members) or $175.00 recurring annually (those that pay annually). That’s for every member that signs up through your link. Image over time that have 100 month-to-month members that have signed up through your link…that’s $2,350.00 per month of passive income. This is doable because there are members collecting these amounts and more.
For those that sign up as a free Starter Member and complete their profile you will receive a $1.00 credit that you can use to pay for things within the WA platform or cash out. Not bad, huh? I say every little bit add up!
Now’s probably a good time to tell you that if you click on any of these links I will receive a commission from Wealthy Affiliate if you sign up as a Premium Member.
The Support: You Won’t Find a Better Group
First of all, the co-founders, Kyle and Carson, are very active within the platform. They respond to comments multiple times a day and will respond to private messages you send them. Kyle is more visible in making comments while Carson is more on the tech side.
WA has staff that will assist with your website issues through their Site Support. They are quick to respond, so you don’t get stuck. They’ve helped me with a couple of issues that I didn’t know how to take care of myself. This is super important when you don’t have a background in website development.
The Training: What I’ve Learned
What I’ve learned? How to build a website from scratch and write content that has been indexed in Google.
There are multiple ways to learn:
- Follow the Online Entrepenuer Certification. There are 5 levels with 10 sessions each. That’s 50 sessions of videos, links, instructions, and tasks designed to built your website. These 5 levels include: Getting Started; Building Your Own Traffic Producing Website; Making Money!; Mastering Social Engagement; and Achieving Maximum Success Through Content Creation.
- Affiliate Bootcamp Training. There are 7 levels with10 sessions each. That’s 70 sessions of the same type structure as the Online Entrepenuer Certification. These 7 levels include: Getting Your Business Rolling; Content, Keywords and Conversions; Giving Your Site Social Value; Get Visual, Get Aesthetic, Get a Brand Through Media; Knowing Your Audiences & Catapulting Your Referrals; Bing, Yahoo, & The Power of PPC; and How to Scale Successful PPC Campaigns.
- There is an entire library of training put together by members.
- Live Events offered through webinars every Friday evening. They are available as recordings if you can’t catch them live.
- Live Chat and Ask a Question. There are always members online that can answer your questions.
The Community: It Really Does Take a Village
The community is made up of the members of WA and a large part of achieving success. I’ve already mentioned that members will answer questions, but they will also make you feel welcome at the start and encourage you along the way. Participation is highly encouraged and rewarded through rankings among members. Wile there are no monetary benefits, there is the satisfaction of helping others and in my opinion that helps me as well.
Besides the wealth of knowledge gained from participation in the community there’s the encouragement one receives from the community through blogs within WA. These short posts are a collection of insight, lessons learned, accomplishments, and much more.
There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t see someone comment that everyone at WA is like family.
You can even earn credits to pay for your membership or other things within WA by giving feedback to other members on their websites.
Building Websites: Where Do I Start?
Unlike many “free” things you sign up for they are going to ask for your credit card information so they can charge you after so many days unless you cancel.
Well…that’s not the case with WA. Of course there are more benefits with Premium Membership (see below), but you can get started and see if this is really for you before you make that decision. You even get 7 days of full access for free. If you’ve not decided during that time then no big deal and no need to cancel before you’re charged. You only give your credit card information after you’ve decided you want to go Premium.
The Benefits: Free Versus Premium Membership
Who Should…and Shouldn’t Consider Joining Wealthy Affiliate
There’s a reason why you’re reading this and I’d say it’s a sure bet that you’re looking for a way to make good money working from home. Below are some types of people that fit the mold for joining WA, but it’s certainly not a complete list.
- Want to work from home
- Tired of the 9 to 5 rat race
- Looking for extra money
- Want to learn more about becoming an online entrepreneur
- Disabled or taking care of someone disabled
- Want to be at home with your children
This business is NOT for you if you are looking to sit on your tush and get-rich-quick. This is NOT a get-rich-quick scheme, but a buildable business that requires time, effort, and patience. It is all about what you put into it. But that’s the beauty of it…you control when and how. Follow the training to learn how to build your site and you will make money. If you’re looking to earn money the week you put in the work then stay at your 9 to 5.
Pros and Cons: What It All Boils Down To
- You get to work in your PJs
- You are your own boss
- You get to write about what interests you
- You have time to take care of yourself and your family
- You learn new things
- You get excellent training and support
- The can do this at minimal to no cost
- You do not have to be an expert on a topic
- You don’t have to be a professional writer
- You do not earn money instantly
- You have to self-motivate (even with the community)
- It takes time to research your topics and build your site
- The internet changes so quickly that some training instructions for some websites is outdated (Thus the need for some research).
My Final Opinion: Is Wealthy Affiliates for Real?
In my opinion Wealthy Affiliates if for real. I knew nothing about building a website before joining WA and becoming a Premium Member. Since joining I have built two websites (this one and another on the best skincare over 50). My sites are ranked in Google and I’m getting commissions from my affiliate links.
The support, training, and community have all exceeded my expectations. Why don’t you have a look for yourself!
Please drop me a line in the comments and I’ll be happy to get back with you.
