Today I want to share with you how to start in affiliate marketing. I bet you’re already asking yourself if it’s for you. We’ll take a look at what it is and what’s involved in starting your own affiliate marketing business.
Affiliate marketing is not hard, but it does take time. The beauty of it is that the tools critical to your overall success are easily accessible. So, let’s roll up our sleeves and take a look at how to make good money from home!
What in the World is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is an opportunity to earn a commission by referring readers to another site to purchase their products. There is no stock or shipping involved for you. As an affiliate marketer, you only guide visitors to another site so they can purchase certain products or services. One of the largest affiliate marketing programs is Amazon Associates. And we all know they sell everything under the sun!
This is usually done through a website you own with the format of a blog with “how to” or a product review. Before you start to panic or back peddle, it is fun and rewarding to share your experiences with others. Yes, you’re just writing about products, services and/or things you’ve learned along the way…like sitting with a friend and telling them about the fantastic new coffee you’ve discovered.
Aren’t we always sharing our experiences with others? Why not make money while you’re helping others. You don’t have to be an expert to write about what you like and what works…or doesn’t work…for you.
The first website I launched is about skincare over 50. I’m no esthetician, but I am over 50 and I have tried a lot of skincare products and techniques. I simply write about what I’ve learned and share a few product links along the way. I’ve even learned a few new things myself about skincare in the process.
Steps to Get You on the Right Path
This is where we hit the ground running. Everything begins somewhere, so I’m laying down the steps that get you on the right path. These steps below are by no means the entire picture. That comes with the proper training, which we’ll cover next. In the meantime, this is an aerial view of what getting started in affiliate marketing looks like.
- Choose what interests you…you know…what you’d want to talk about. This is called your niche. Like I mentioned, I like skincare, so that’s a niche for one of my websites.
- Create a website. This is easily done through services like WordPress.
- You’ll start writing about things relevant to your niche. These are done as posts to your website.
- Once you’ve created some content you’ll sign up for affiliate programs, such as Amazon Associates and connect links on your website to direct readers to another website to purchase the product.
A special note here: An affiliate program or network should never charge you for linking to their products or services. The key here is that they are paying you to guide customers to them. You will have to give them your banking information for them to pay you commission, so make sure you’re partnering with a reputable company.
Training is Key
One of the most important things I can share with you today is to get the proper training. The key to success is getting traffic to your website. No visits for your website = no clicks on your affiliate links = no money for you.
There are affiliate network programs that will guide you through the process. Try to find one that offers a free starter level so you can check it out before making a commitment. I have a membership with Wealthy Affiliates. They have a free starter level that offers training to get you started and they will host two websites for you at no charge. They also offer a Premium membership at a small fee for additional training and enhanced website support.
Whether you choose Wealthy Affiliates or another program, be sure they offer a step-by-step guide to get you launched the proper way, which is to get you noticed by Google (ranked) and get you the traffic you need. With the training offered by Wealthy Affiliates I was able to get ranked in one week. It’s not hard, you just have to know how to do it the right way.
You’ll Want Support Too
We want support in every aspect of our lives, right? Life itself is tricky enough, then add something like this to the mix. You want to have technical support for sure. Tech support is very important when dealing with anything on a computer, especially with managing a website. You’ll want to be part of a program that offers top-notch technical support.
But there’s more than technical support. There’s emotional support…support from a community. You should be looking for a program that has members that will encourage you and answer questions for you. That’s another thing I love about Wealthy Affiliate. I have formed friends from around the world that encourage me, not only with me questions, trials, and celebrations, but through there successes as well.
So…what are you waiting on? What do you have to lose? Are you ready to make money from home? Is this really for you? The best way to answer these questions is to give it a try. With free starter membership and a free website you are only out of time invested if it’s not for you.
I want to share with you my only regret about joining Wealthy Affiliates. I looked at it about a month before I actually took the leap. I sat on it thinking I had plenty of time to decide. Well…it took me getting laid off my job to get serious and join. My regret is that I lost a month of building my business. Don’t let that be you.
I hope this information has been helpful to you. My next post will be a review of Wealthy Affiliates, where I’ll share more details and my honest opinion about their program.
Thank you for reading! Please leave me a comment or question and I’ll be thrilled to get back with you.
Best wishes to you!
