Paid Writing Jobs From Home – The Dirty Truth

Paid writing jobs from home

So…you’re here because you either love to write or at least good at it and you want to know if you can make any money at it. Maybe you’re looking to make extra money – Christmas is right around the corner – or you’re looking to stay at home. Whatever your reason, you’re thinking about paid writing jobs from home. Well, we’re going to get into the dirty truth today.

Writing for Hire – Does It Pay?

There are many opportunities to write for someone else…if you have a strong portfolio. There are companies that will pay a good full-time salary, but they’re looking for people with marketing degrees and plenty of content under their belt. There are also freelance jobs, but they also require proof of experience before they’ll even talk to you.

You can try your hand at transcription, but they pay based on experience. There are some companies that will pay you the equivalent of chicken feed if you’re just starting out. Read the reviews carefully though, because some people complain of not getting paid or that the recordings are of such poor quality that it takes them a long time to transcribe. Many freelance companies pay by the job and not per hour. This means spending multiple hours for only a few dollars. A large majority of transcription jobs are medical, which means a basic understanding of medical terminology is required.

You can also write essays, term papers, etc., but remember that you’re being paid by students who typically don’t have a lot of money. You can write resumes, but there’s not a lot of money there either. Keep in mind that these are not sustainable jobs either.

Become an Author – Am I Famous Yet?

You can write your own novel…exciting, right? It takes authors years and many books to become famous and make real money. Everyone knows James Patterson, right? It took him 20 years after writing his first book to leave his career in advertising to focus completely on writing. That’s a long wait…even for one of the great writers of our time.

Writing a book – if you want it to be readable – requires a lot of research as well as the time to write. I know an author – she’s one on my favorites – and it takes time for her to research details before and during writing the story. This applies to fiction as well because you want the reader to melt into the story or you won’t make any money at all.

According to Self-Publishing School it takes the following time to publish a book:

  • 30,000 – 50,000 words: 500 words/day = 60 – 100 days
  • 50,000 – 80,000 words: 500 words/day = 100 – 160 days
  • 80,000 – 100,000 words: 500 words/day = 160 – 200 days

Self-Publishing School also says to expect to spend between $100 – $2,500 in publishing fees.

Be Your Own Boss – Start a Blog

Are you feeling frustrated about now? I was too because I considered all the options above. Then I stumbled upon affiliate marketing. With affiliate marketing, you write about a topic or a product review on your blog, which is a website you create. In your blog you provide links to products for sale by someone else (no need for you to purchase and keep stock) and the company pays you a commission.

We’ve already determined that you love to write and a blog is just that. You’re writing about something you’re interested in and making money at the same time. See my article HERE on how to start in affiliate marketing. This article explains the process a bit more. You can also see my article HERE on how to start blogging for money. There are basically 4 steps to starting a blog:

1. Build a website
2. Write content
3. Gain Traffic/Rankings (Google, Bing, etc.)
4. Earn money from affiliate links

Good Training – Is There Any Out There?

So, now that we’re getting somewhere, lets talk about training. This all sounds good about building a website and all, but where do you start? Believe me, I had the same questions. I didn’t know anything about building a website and domain names and getting ranked in search engines (other than the overview in college). That’s why I decided that I needed to be connected with a good training program and found Wealthy Affiliate.

Wealthy Affiliate is a platform that provides step-by-step training and support to help you launch your own business as an affiliate marketer. The beauty of this platform, besides the awesome training is that you can start for FREE. Yes, I said FREE! Wealthy Affiliate will host two websites for you for free and help you get started. There is also an amazing community of other affiliate marketers just waiting to help you as they’ve helped me.

It is possible to start with no fees and no up charges. Of course, there is a Premium membership that will offer you more, but you can start on the free Starter Membership…no pressure and no credit card needed. You can click HERE to see my full review of Wealthy Affiliate.

Here’s a glimpse of the two training tracts offered by Wealthy Affiliate:

Online Entrepreneur Certification Training

Online Entrepeneur Certification Training

Affiliate Bootcamp Training

Affiliate Bootcamp Training

As you can see, there is plenty of training offered in this platform. My recommendation is to check it out. There’s nothing to lose but a lost opportunity if you don’t check it out!

One Last Thing

Now is the best time of the year to get involved with Wealthy Affiliate. While the free Starter Membership will get you on your way, Wealthy Affiliate also offers a Premuim Membership. If you took time to read my review you saw the benefits of each membership. Membership, like with many companies, can be monthly or annually. And like many companies, the annual rate is discounted.

What you won’t see at most companies, however, is a Black Friday deal! From Friday, November 29, 2019 – Monday, December 1, 2019 an annual Premium membership is only $299…an additional savings of $60. Read more about it HERE from Kyle, co-founder of Wealthy Affiliate.

I’m telling you this now, because you can join for free and check it out in time to decide it you want go Premium. No pressure…your choice…I just want you to have this opportunity before it’s gone. No worries if you decide to wait…you’ll just pay the regular fees if you decide to go Premium.

Once again…there’s nothing to lose but a lost opportunity if you don’t check it out!

Let me know your thoughts. I’d love to hear from you. Drop a comment or question below and I’ll get back with you.

  1. It was a great read. You have done perfectly in breaking the facts. And I absolutely support you.

There is no reason to waste time writing a book or write content for others. Better you write for yourself and build up your own business. Being an affiliate marketer I know the facts, I know how profitable this profession is. And I absolutely respect the courses of Wealthy Affiliate for this. What a great place to learn online marketing!

About one thing I am filling really sad; I have a renewal in WA recently and I’m just going to miss the Black Friday offer. I would have grab if it would be started one week earlier.

Anyway, I suggest other visitors, not to miss this offer. It’s a great deal.

  2. The first options seem interesting, but like you said they imply a lot of money and time. These 2 things are definitely the biggest challenge for most entrepreneur since to build a business, you need money and time!

The solution you propose is the best option for anyone who would like to create a business at low cost. I’m myself member of Wealthy Affiliate and I love it so much. My business is rolling! I encourage everyone to take a look at this opportunity.

    Thanks for sharing this 🙂

  3. Thank you so much Karen! This Wealthy Affiliate looks really good, especially as I have no previous training, just a desire to write about my passion, classical music.
Do you think there would be affiliate programs for this topic? Our traditional classical music training is so far from business and promoting anything but the playing itself.
I see a lot of training and classrooms. So many great blogs of other members I started following, but I’m still in the free starter membership and trying to understand how to relate what I learn to my professiona of a classical musician.
    Would you have any ideas?
Thank you very much for sharing this helpful information!

    1. Hi Jane! Thank you for your comments. Have you thought about promoting products or services? As long as they’re related to your niche you can write reviews. I would also reach out to the community at WA and ask for ideas. They’re such a supportive group. And lastly, it may be time to consider going Premium to continue your training. Hope this helps!

  4. Great read Karen! We all dream of making money for ourselves, being our own bosses and even better, to be able to work from the comfort of your own home! People out there love blogging and writing but don’t realise that they can gain revenue from doing something they love and are good at! Wealthy affiliate looks and sounds amazing and a sure way to gain training to start earning revenue from writing. And free to start!! Wow.

    1. Hi Lee! Thanks for you comments. I was blown away because I always thought bloggers were experts in their niche, but that’s not the case. I was also surprised with the ease of writing a blog myself. And WA has been a great asset in helping me get my feet wet!
